As a result of the urban challenge and the need to protect our outstanding urban cultures, The World Bank and UNESCO took the initiative to establish a set of Urban Design Guidelines for historic cities. As a contribution to this initiative the Nordic World Heritage Office / UNESCO offers the book “Sustainable Historic Cities?”. The book is a result of a Baltic-Nordic State Party co-operation, examining the overlapping fields of heritage protection and sustainable development. The cities of Tallinn in Estonia, Riga in Latvia, Visby in Sweden and Ålesund in Norway are, in this respect, subjects for case studies. Talllinn, Riga and Visby are inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The author is architect Hans-Jacob Roald, senior advisor at the Nordic World Heritage Office. | |||
